Have you ever heard the term “Backpacking” and had these questions: “What is backpacking?” “What gear do I need to go backpacking?” “Are there places nearby where I can go backpacking?" I know I have.
Now we can get our questions answered!
Shades of the Outdoors: A BIPOC Outdoor Enthusiast Community is teaming up with our local Ann Arbor REI to offer an “Intro to Backpacking” class! The expert staff at REI will guide us through all the basics of backpacking to make sure we have the confidence to hit the trails!
Are you a beginner, expert, curious about nature, or just want to learn more about the outdoors? Come join us! All skill levels (and ages) are welcome!

BIPOC Bird Walk

Shades of the Outdoors: A BIPOC Outdoor Enthusiast Community will be teaming up with BIPOC Birders of Michigan for a springtime bird walk! April Campbell, founder of BIPOC Birders of Michigan will guide us through Mary Beth Doyle Park and help us identify birds! Are you a beginner birder, curious about nature, or just want to walk outside? Come join us! All skill levels (and ages) are welcome!
Nature Walk with Natural Area Preservation and the Ann Arbor District Library
Join Natural Area Preservation and Ann Arbor District Library staff for an informative nature walk through Gallup Park.
The walk will take place at the Gallup Park Boat Launch.

Diversity in the Outdoors Speaker Series with Natural Area Preservation
The Ann Arbor District Library, in partnership with Natural Area Preservation, started a speaker’s series titled “Diversity in the Outdoors Speaker Series with Natural Area Preservation.”
This month’s talk features Victor Chen from the Washtenaw Audubon Society, and Shades of the Outdoors’ founder Brandan Freeman. They will share their experiences, passions, and a message of inclusion with the community.
The event takes place on Wednesday Feb 28 at 6pm at the Malletts Creek Library.

WCPD x Shades of the Outdoors: Black History Month Hike
“We Out Here. We Been Here”
Washtenaw County Parks invites you to celebrate “Black History Month” outside! Join Brandan Freeman (Founder of Shades of the Outdoors: A BIPOC Outdoor Enthusiast Community) on a nature walk at County Farm Park on Sunday, February 25th from 10am-noon. During the event Brandan will speak on historical contributions to outdoor recreation by African Americans, and the impact of continued Black engagement with the outdoors. Pre-registration is required so we can communicate meeting spot, weather updates, and trail conditions.

Take to the ice and show off your spins, twirls, and jumps (or hang on to the wall for dear life like me) February 17th at 3pm at Buhr Park Ice Arena!
Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for children, and skate rentals are $3.
