The Mighty Oak

The mighty oak tree has been revered for centuries.

It serves as a symbol of our nation, a signifier of military rank, and an item sacred in religions across many cultures.

The Northern Red Oak, Michigan’s most prevalent oak, has been chosen as a symbol for Shades of the Outdoors.

The oak contributes in many ways to nature and humanity. Its fruit and bark sustain the life of over 2000 unique species. Also, carpenters have harvested its beams to be used as shelter for generations. The oak is integral. The oak is vital.

So too are BIPOC recreationists.

Through our strength and resilience, we have contributed greatly in the fields of outdoor recreation, exploration, and conservation. We have built trails, created maps, and discovered the lands that have been enjoyed for centuries.

Let the oak’s marvelous autumnal leaves serve as a reminder of the contributions of individuals, of all shades, to the outdoors.

We’re glad to have you join the community. Let’s get outside together.
